Car Assist Handles and Seatbelt Reachers: A Buying Guide

Compare car door support handles, window-frame strap handles and seatbelt reachers. Check vehicle compatibility and choose the aid for the task.
Handybar removable car assist handle

A car assist handle provides a handhold for getting into or out of a compatible vehicle. A seatbelt reacher helps bring the belt within easier reach once you are seated. They address different tasks, so start with the part of the journey you want help with before comparing products.

This guide covers door-striker handles, window-frame strap handles and seatbelt reachers. You can browse our Daily Living Aids collection for current products, prices and availability.

Which type of car aid are you comparing?

  • A rigid car assist handle: a removable handhold that fits a specified attachment point on the vehicle. The Handybar uses a compatible door striker.
  • A window-frame strap handle: an adjustable strap and grip secured to a suitable framed window, following its fitting instructions.
  • A seatbelt reacher: an attachment used to bring the seatbelt forward. It serves a reaching task, rather than providing a handhold for standing.

Check the exact attachment method before ordering. Two products described as car handles may attach in different places, and a product labelled as a reacher is not interchangeable with a transfer handle.

Check the vehicle first

Make the compatibility check on the door and seating position where the aid will be used. A driver's door and a passenger door should each be checked rather than assuming that one inspection covers every position.

Keep the product instructions beside you and compare the required attachment with the actual vehicle. If you cannot identify the fitting or confirm a secure match, contact us before purchasing. A photograph of the relevant fitting and the product name can help us check the details with the supplier.

Door-striker fit: the Handybar example

The Handybar car assist handle is a removable rigid handle. Stander specifies a U-shaped door striker secured to the frame by two bolts or screws. A striker bolt in place of that U-shaped fitting is not compatible. Check this detail before treating a description such as “universal fit” as confirmation for your car.

The manufacturer's stated capacity is 350lb, approximately 159kg. Use the limit and instructions for the exact product supplied. It comes assembled and does not require a permanent vehicle modification.

For the fitting details, see Stander's Handybar support information and the brochure linked on our product page. This buying guide does not replace the manufacturer's instructions.

Window-frame fit: the Car Caddie example

The Stander Car Caddie uses a strap handle attached to a framed car window. It is a different attachment style from a door-striker handle. Check that the window has the required frame and review the supplier's fitting steps before ordering.

The current Australian supplier listing gives a strap adjustment of 18cm to 25cm and a handle width of 13cm. Check whether the permitted positioning suits the intended seating position. Do not assume that a strap can attach to a frameless window or that changing its length makes every installation suitable.

Compare the handle, the person and the task together

Once the vehicle fitting is confirmed, consider the grip, the position of the handhold and the product's stated user limit. Extra features should come after these basic checks. A handle that attaches to the car still needs to be appropriate for the person using it.

If you are unsure which kind of support suits a transfer, an occupational therapist or your care team can assess the person and vehicle together. The most compact handle, or the handle with the most features, is not automatically the right choice.

When a seatbelt reacher is the relevant comparison

If the difficult part is reaching back for the belt after sitting down, compare a seatbelt reacher rather than choosing another support handle. The Grab 'N Pull Seatbelt Reacher attaches to the existing belt strap to provide a reachable grip.

Our current listing describes approximately 17cm of additional reach. Treat this as a reaching aid: it is not a buckle extender or a support handle for lifting yourself from the seat. Check its fitting instructions and normal belt operation for your vehicle before use.

A handle and a reacher may address two separate tasks in the same routine. That does not mean everyone needs both. Choose each item only when its purpose, fitting and instructions match the task you are trying to make easier.

Five things to confirm before ordering

  1. The task: identify whether you want a handhold for entering or leaving the vehicle, or help reaching the seatbelt.
  2. The attachment: check the exact door-striker or window-frame requirements, or the seatbelt reacher's fitting method.
  3. The supplied model: match the product name, photographs and brochure. Similar names across brands or versions are not proof of identical specifications.
  4. The limits and adjustment: read the specific user capacity and permitted settings for a support handle. Do not apply another model's figures.
  5. The instructions: review fitting, removal, inspection and use before placing the order. Ask us about any missing detail.

Common buying questions

Will a car door assist handle fit every vehicle?

No single description confirms every fit. For example, Handybar's manufacturer distinguishes a U-shaped striker from an incompatible striker bolt. Check the product's own requirements on the intended vehicle.

Can I buy a seatbelt reacher instead of a support handle?

Choose according to the task. A reacher brings the belt forward; a compatible support handle provides a handhold for entry or exit. They are not substitutes for one another.

Do I need to buy a kit?

Compare what is included before buying multiple items. If you already own a suitable handle, you may only be comparing a reacher for a separate task. Check each component's compatibility rather than assuming a bundle is required.
