Visual Timers: How Families and Teachers Use Them

Visual Timer

A visual timer shows time as a coloured disc that slowly disappears. No numbers to read, no ticking to listen to — just a clear, visual countdown that anyone can understand at a glance. Here's how our customers use them.

In the Classroom

Teachers tell us visual timers are one of the most useful tools in their kit. They use them for:

  • Activity transitions — “When the red is gone, we pack up and move to the mat”
  • Independent work blocks — setting a 15-minute writing window so kids know exactly how long they have
  • Quiet time — a visible countdown makes it easier for kids to stay settled
  • Turn-taking — each child gets the timer for their turn on a shared activity

Customers tell us the biggest benefit is fewer interruptions. When kids can see the time left, they stop asking “how much longer?”

At Home: Homework

Breaking homework into timed chunks makes it less overwhelming. Set the timer for 10 or 15 minutes, work until it's done, then take a break. Parents tell us this approach transforms homework battles into manageable blocks.

At Home: Bedtime Routines

The visual timer is brilliant for winding down. Customers use it for “10 minutes of reading before lights out” or “5 more minutes of play.” Because the child can see the time shrinking, there are fewer arguments when it's time to stop.

At Home: Screen Time

Set it next to the tablet or TV. When the colour is gone, screen time is over. Parents tell us it takes the argument out of screen limits because the timer is the “bad guy,” not them.
