Sensory Swing Setup Guide: Installation Tips and Ideas
Setting Up Your Sensory Swing at Home
A swing at home is one of the best investments our customers tell us about. Once it's up, it gets used every single day for calming down, active play, reading, and everything in between. Here's how to get yours set up safely.
What You Need
- A stud finder — you'll need to find a ceiling joist or beam to anchor into. Plasterboard alone won't hold the weight.
- A heavy-duty ceiling hook or eye bolt — rated to at least double the user's weight. Most hardware stores carry them.
- A carabiner or swivel hook — connects the swing to the ceiling hook. A swivel lets the swing rotate freely.
- A drill and appropriate fixings — if you're unsure, get a handyman to install the ceiling anchor. It's a 15-minute job.
Where to Hang It
Customers tell us they've set up swings in all sorts of spots:
- Bedroom — the most popular choice. Close to where they sleep, easy to use for winding down before bed.
- Playroom or rumpus room — a dedicated play space means they can swing freely without bumping furniture.
- Pergola or verandah — outdoor setups work beautifully in good weather. Just bring the fabric swing inside when it rains.
- Doorway frame — if you can't drill into the ceiling, a doorway pull-up bar with a carabiner can work for lighter users. Always check the weight rating.
Whatever the spot, make sure there's at least a metre of clearance in every direction so they can swing without hitting walls or furniture.
Weight Limits & Safety
- Always check the weight rating on your swing and your ceiling anchor the lowest number is your limit.
- Inspect the fabric and stitching regularly. Replace the swing if you notice any fraying or tears.
- Younger children should always be supervised.
- Make sure the ceiling anchor is into solid timber, not just plasterboard.
Room Setup Ideas
Our customers love pairing their swing with other calming elements:
- Place a soft mat or crash pad underneath for safe dismounts
- Add fairy lights or a lava lamp nearby for a cosy atmosphere
- Keep a basket of books or fidget toys within reach of the swing
- If you have the space, hang two swings side by side siblings love swinging together
Single Swing vs Layered Hammock
- Therapy Swing — a single layer of stretchy fabric. Great for swinging, spinning, and cocooning. Simple to set up with one anchor point.
- Layered Lycra Therapy Hammock — 4 or 6 layers of lycra for a more enveloping, cocooned feel. Customers tell us this one is especially popular for winding down and quiet time.
