Weighted Plush Toys: Our Cuddly Picks for Calm Moments

Weighted plush toys are gentle, cuddly, and surprisingly grounding — they sit on a lap, drape over a chest, or hug a tummy with just enough weight to feel calming. Customers tell us they're one of those products that gets used far more often than expected, by adults and kids alike.

This guide walks through our three weighted plush options, what makes each one different, and how Australian families use them.

What is a weighted plush toy?

A weighted plush is a soft toy with measured weight sewn into its body — usually glass or plastic beads in pockets — designed to feel reassuringly heavy when held, hugged, or rested on the body. The weight is enough to be noticeable but not so much that it's uncomfortable for kids or adults.

Customers tell us the appeal is the combination: the soft, familiar shape of a teddy or knot ball, plus the calming sensation of gentle pressure. Many use them for winding down at bedtime, lap weight while watching TV, or as a desk companion during long study or work sessions.

Our three weighted plush options

Weighted Teddies — $35.00

Weighted Teddies range — soft plush bears with built-in weight, Sensory Assist Australia

Our entry-level weighted plush range. Each teddy weighs around 1kg — enough to feel hugged but light enough for a small child to carry around. Available in a few characters including Bella the Rabbit. Soft minky-style fabric outer, machine washable cover.

Best for: Bedtime cuddles, lap weight for kids during quiet time, gift for a child who loves stuffed animals.

Cooling Belly Weighted Teddy — $79.95

Cooling Belly Weighted Teddy in Whale, Crab and Turtle designs with heatable weight bag

Our premium plush option. The teddy itself is plush and weighted, but the standout feature is the removable 1kg belly insert — pop it in the freezer for a cool tummy compress, or microwave it for a warm hug. Available in three sea-creature characters: Whale, Crab, and Turtle.

Customers tell us this one earns its keep. Cool compress for hot summer nights, warm compress for tummy aches, plain old cuddly weight for everything in between.

Best for: Families who want one product that does multiple jobs. Older kids and adults who want a heat/cold companion alongside the cuddle.

Weighted Knot Ball — $49.95

Weighted Knot Ball — soft plush ball alternative to weighted teddy

Not everyone wants a teddy. The Weighted Knot Ball is the same idea — soft fabric, built-in weight — but in a round, knotted shape that suits older kids, teens, and adults who don't want a stuffed animal sitting on the couch. The knotted texture also gives hands something to fiddle with.

Best for: Teens, adults, families who want a gender-neutral and age-neutral option. Lap weight at the desk or on the couch.

How customers use them

"My 7-year-old has slept with Bella the Rabbit for six months. She's basically refused to go anywhere without her. Best $35 we've ever spent." — Sarah, NSW

"Bought the Crab cooling teddy for my partner's tummy aches. We use the cold pack version constantly through summer. Worth the price." — Dan, QLD

"Got the knot ball for my desk during long workdays. Sounds silly but the weight on my lap genuinely helps me focus." — Priya, VIC

Choosing between teddy and knot ball

The decision usually comes down to two things: who it's for, and how it'll be used.

  • Kid under 8? Weighted Teddy. The character matters — having a name and a face makes it a bedtime companion, not just a weight.
  • Older kid, teen, or adult? Knot Ball. More grown-up shape, easier to use as lap weight without it feeling like a toy.
  • Want hot/cold therapy too? Cooling Belly Weighted Teddy. The removable insert makes it useful for tummy aches, period pain, and hot summer nights.
  • Tight budget? Weighted Teddies at $35 is the entry point.
  • Buying a gift? Cooling Belly Weighted Teddy looks the most "gift-worthy" with the character options and the multi-purpose insert.

Common questions about weighted plush toys

What age are weighted plush toys suitable for?

From around age 3 upwards. We don't recommend weighted toys for babies under 3 due to general safety guidelines around weight on small children's chests. For toddlers and up, the weight is light enough to be safe for supervised use.

How much weight is in them?

Our weighted teddies are around 1kg. The Weighted Knot Ball is roughly 1kg. The Cooling Belly Teddy has a 1kg removable insert. As a rule of thumb, weighted products should be no more than 10% of body weight for kids — so a 10kg child shouldn't have more than 1kg on them at a time.

Can I machine wash them?

Most have removable, washable covers. Always check the product page for specifics before washing.

What's the difference between a weighted plush and a weighted blanket?

A weighted blanket covers the whole body and is typically 4-9kg, designed for bed use. A weighted plush is portable, around 1kg, and used in your lap or hugged. They serve different jobs — many of our customers own both.

Are weighted plush toys NDIS funded?

Many NDIS plan managers will fund weighted products as low-cost assistive technology. We're no longer NDIS registered, but you can purchase from us and claim through your plan manager. We'll send a tax invoice on request.

Where we ship from

All weighted plush products ship from our warehouse in Taren Point, Sutherland Shire, Sydney. Standard shipping is 2-5 business days Australia-wide. Orders placed before 12pm Mon-Fri usually go out same day.
