Newborn Ear Protection Australia: Our Buyer's Guide for Babies

If you're shopping for a baby — for a wedding, a fireworks display, a sporting event, or just a noisy household — you've probably been told to grab some ear muffs. The trouble is, most "kids" ear muffs are sized for ages 3+. Newborns and babies under 12 months need a different fit and softer pressure on their delicate skull. (Hearing protection is just one part of setting up a baby's sensory environment — see our broader guide to sensory toys for babies 0–12 months.)

This guide covers the two ear protection options we sell that fit babies from birth — what makes them different, when to use them, and what customers tell us about each.

When does a baby actually need ear protection?

You don't need them for everyday life. Babies generally cope with normal household sound just fine. The situations where Australian parents reach for baby ear muffs are:

  • Fireworks and concerts — New Year's Eve, Australia Day, Vivid Sydney, Carols by Candlelight
  • Sporting events — V8 Supercars, footy finals, rugby matches with crowd noise above 100 dB
  • Aircraft cabins — long-haul flights, especially during takeoff and landing
  • Power tools and lawn mowers — when bub is napping or playing nearby
  • Family weddings and big gatherings — DJ speakers, live bands, indoor venues
  • Older sibling activities — tap class, music lessons, kids' birthday parties at trampoline parks

The general guideline most Australian parents work with: if you'd raise your voice to be heard, your baby's ears are working harder than they should.

Our two newborn ear muff options compared

We stock two ear muffs designed to fit babies from birth: our value-priced Baby Ear Muffs and the premium Alpine Muffy Baby from a leading Dutch hearing protection brand. Here's how they compare.

Baby Ear Muffs — $19.95

Baby Ear Muffs in mint, blue, and pink — Sensory Assist Australia

Our entry-level baby ear muffs cover ages 0-12 months and come in soft mint, baby blue, and baby pink. The headband is light-tension foam — it sits gently on a baby's skull without pressing too hard. Ear cups are padded silicone for comfort against soft skin.

NRR (Noise Reduction Rating): 22 dB — enough for fireworks, concerts, and crowd noise.

Best for: First-time buyers, occasional events, families who don't need certified hearing protection.

The Alpine Muffy Baby is the go-to choice for Australian parents who want certified hearing protection. Engineered in the Netherlands, it's designed specifically for babies aged 0-36 months. The adjustable elastic headband expands as your baby grows, and the cups are oversized to fully encapsulate baby ears without pressing on the soft fontanelles.

NRR (Noise Reduction Rating): 23 dB — CE-certified to EN 71 (European toy safety standard).

Best for: Regular concert-goers, festival families, parents who want a long-life pair that grows with bub.

How to fit ear muffs on a newborn

  1. Loosen the headband first. Both pairs come with the headband at minimum tension — extend it before you put it on bub.
  2. Slip on from front to back. Tilt your baby slightly forward, place the cups over the ears, then settle the headband over the crown. Don't pull from behind.
  3. Check the seal. The cups should fully cover both ears with no gap at the front or back. If you see a gap, adjust the headband size up.
  4. Watch for fussiness. The first 30 seconds will feel new — most babies settle once they realise the room got quieter. If your baby is crying after a few minutes, the fit is probably too tight.
  5. Limit wear to 2-3 hours at a stretch. Take them off during quieter parts of an event to let ears breathe.

What customers tell us

"Took these to the V8 Supercars in Bathurst with our 8-month-old. Slept through the whole final race. Best $20 I've spent." — Kate, NSW

"We bought the Alpine Muffy Baby pair for our newborn before our wedding reception. Worth every dollar. The fit is so much better than the cheaper ones I'd seen at chemist warehouse." — Jess & Tom, VIC

"My partner uses the chainsaw on weekends and our 6-month-old naps in the carrier nearby. Pop the muffs on her and she sleeps through it." — Marc, QLD

How they're different from kids' ear muffs

If you've been browsing the broader Hearing Protection range, you'll see kids' ear muffs at similar price points. The differences that matter for babies:

  • Headband tension. Kids' muffs have firmer headbands designed for active 3-12 year olds. Too much pressure on a baby's skull is uncomfortable and unsafe.
  • Cup size. Baby ear muffs have smaller, softer cups sized to baby ears. Kids' cups are larger and can sit awkwardly.
  • Fontanelle clearance. The Alpine Muffy Baby is specifically designed to avoid pressure on the soft spots on a baby's skull (fontanelles), which don't fully close until around 18 months.

If your child is closer to 18-24 months, our Kids Ear Muffs may be the better fit — but for true newborns and babies under 12 months, stick with baby-specific designs.

Common questions about newborn ear protection

At what age can babies wear ear muffs?

From birth. Both options we stock are rated 0+ months. The Alpine Muffy Baby is specifically designed with newborn fontanelles in mind.

How loud is too loud for a baby?

The general guideline parents work with: anything above 80 dB sustained, or sudden noises above 100 dB, can affect a baby's hearing. For reference, normal conversation is 60 dB, a vacuum cleaner is around 75 dB, fireworks are 110-150 dB, and a rock concert is 110-130 dB.

Are baby ear muffs safe for sleep?

For supervised naps in a carrier or pram, yes — both pairs are light enough that babies can sleep in them. We don't recommend leaving them on a sleeping baby in a cot unsupervised.

How long can a baby wear ear muffs?

2-3 hours at a stretch is the rule of thumb. Take a break during quieter parts of an event. If you notice red marks behind the ears, loosen the headband or take a longer break.

Do these work for babies who are noise-sensitive?

Many of our customers buy them for exactly this reason. Babies who startle easily at sudden sounds often settle quickly once the muffs are on. We're retailers, not clinicians — if you're unsure whether ear protection is the right approach, have a chat with your maternal child health nurse or GP.

Can I wash them?

The cups can be wiped down with a damp cloth. Don't submerge — the foam padding holds water and takes days to dry.

Where we ship from

Both pairs ship from our warehouse in Taren Point, Sutherland Shire, Sydney. Orders placed before 12pm Mon-Fri usually go out same day. Standard shipping is 2-5 business days Australia-wide.

If you're a NDIS participant, both products can be claimed through your plan manager. We'll send a tax invoice on request.
