Setting Up a Sensory Corner at Home — What Our Customers Use

What Is a Sensory Corner?

A sensory corner is a dedicated space in your home where your child can go to wind down, play, or just feel comfortable. It doesn’t need to be fancy — a corner of a bedroom, a nook under the stairs, or even a section of the living room works perfectly.

We hear from customers every week who’ve set up sensory corners at home. Here’s what they use and how they put it together.

The Basics: What Every Sensory Corner Needs

Something Soft to Sit On

A cushion, bean bag, or floor mat gives the corner a clear “this is my space” feeling. Many of our customers use a Lycra Body Sock as a sit-in cocoon — kids love climbing in and just hanging out.

Something to Squeeze or Fidget With

Keep a small basket of fidget toys within reach. Our most popular picks for sensory corners:

Something for Deep Pressure

Deep pressure is the “firm hug” feeling that many kids find calming. Popular options:

Optional Extras Our Customers Love

Noise Reduction

If your child is sensitive to noise, a pair of ear muffs or ear plugs in the corner gives them the option to block out the world when they need to.

Visual Calm

Soft lighting makes a big difference. Customers tell us a warm lamp or fairy lights transform the space. Some families add a visual timer so kids can see how long they’ve been in their corner — helpful for transitions.

Something to Chew

If your child is a chewer, keep a chew necklace or pencil topper in the corner. It gives them a safe outlet without reaching for sleeves, collars, or fingernails.

Tips from Families Who’ve Done It

  • Let your child help set it up — they’re more likely to use it if they chose what goes in it
  • Keep it simple — 3-5 items is plenty. Too many options can be overwhelming
  • Make it accessible — kids should be able to go there whenever they want, not just when told to
  • Rotate items — swap out a fidget toy or two every few weeks to keep it fresh
  • No screens — most families tell us the corner works best as a screen-free zone

It Doesn’t Need to Cost Much

You don’t need everything at once. Start with one or two items and build from there. A body sock and a couple of fidget toys is a great starting point — you can always add more as you see what your child gravitates toward.
