Children's noise reducing headphones — what to look for

Three things matter when shopping for kids' noise-reducing headphones (or ear muffs, depending on what you call them):

• NRR (Noise Reduction Rating). Look for 22-25 dB. Anything less and they won't dampen loud events; anything much more is overkill for kids.
• Headband fit. Adjustable, light-tension headbands are essential. Stiff adult-style bands aren't safe on small skulls.
• Cup size and seal. Cups should fully cover the ears with no gap front or back. Too-small cups defeat the purpose.

Common questions about ear protection

What's the difference between ear muffs and noise cancelling earmuffs?

"Noise cancelling earmuffs" is often used to mean passive noise-reducing ear muffs (which our range is) — they physically block sound waves with foam, padding, and a sealed cup. True electronic noise-cancellation (active) is rare in kids' ear muffs and not necessary for most situations. Our passive ear muffs handle fireworks, concerts, and sensory-overload moments effectively.

What age can babies wear ear muffs?

Are kids ear muffs good for autistic children?

Many of our customers buy them for exactly this reason. Children who experience sensory overload often settle quickly once the muffs are on — the muffled environment helps them stay present in busy spaces without becoming overwhelmed. We don't make clinical claims, but families tell us this is one of the most-used items in their sensory toolkit.

How loud is too loud for a child?

The general guideline most parents work with: anything above 80 dB sustained, or sudden noises above 100 dB, is worth protecting against. For reference, a vacuum cleaner is around 75 dB, fireworks displays are 110-150 dB, and a rock concert is 110-130 dB.

Are ear muffs NDIS funded?

Many NDIS plan managers will fund hearing protection as low-cost assistive technology. We're no longer NDIS registered, but you can purchase from us and claim through your plan manager.

Can kids wear ear muffs to sleep?

For supervised naps in a carrier, pram, or car seat, yes. We don't recommend leaving them on a sleeping child unsupervised. For sleep specifically, soft ear plugs or a weighted eye mask are often a better choice.
