Yes! There are several key differences between these developing products.
Playdough holds its shape better than any of the other products. This is why playdough is often used for building and moulded with additional tools. However, if you leave it out for too long, it will harden.
Silly putty does not hold its shape as well as playdough. However, it can be stretched, squished, and twisted in a more stretchable shape. Putty will also not dry out with air exposure like play dough does.
Therapy putty has a very similar texture to silly putty. It is mainly designed with the intention of hand therapy and strengthening. It comes in two different resistances - softer and harder. You can toggle between these two different resistances as your child progresses through developmental therapy.
Slime is the closest to liquid out of all these toys. However, it is ooey-gooey, drippy, and the messiest of all the four categories. Slime can be used as a sensory tool, but it doesn't have the same strengthening abilities as therapy putty.
The primary uses for therapy putty are developing hand grip and finger strength. It has multiple applications, including rehabilitation for improving hand strength after an injury, illness, surgery, or stroke. It is also used with people who have disorders affecting their muscle tone, grip strength, and physical ability.
Therapy putty is also used as a tool with children at home and in occupational therapy sessions. In addition, children with autism, ADD, ADHD, cerebral palsy, or other developmental conditions can benefit from using therapy putty.
Using therapy putty can lead to improved grip, increased finger strength, improved motor skills, increased thumb strength, sensory tactile input for children with autism or other sensory processing disorders, calming children with attention disorders, raising overall sensory awareness related to hands and fingers, fidget relief for those with ADHD or ADD.
Improving fine motor skills can help your child with making movements with their small hand muscles and fingers. These skills and muscle development come in handy with writing, getting dressed, picking up objects, drawing, stacking blocks, cutting with scissors, colouring, and other play activities. In addition, as your child gets older, these improved skills will lead to development in brushing teeth, eating independently, and more.
As previously mentioned, there are various therapy putty tools available to choose from. We recommend having a variety of colours and textures to mix up your child's hand therapy routine. If your child doesn't like the texture of a particular putty or their hand strengthens to the point where they are ready to move on, having another resistance-level putty comes in handy. Also, we all know how quickly children can switch up their favourite colour. Having multiple colours handy will mean you are prepared for your child's changing needs!
There are typically six different resistance levels of therapy putty available. These are extra soft, soft, medium-soft, medium, firm, and extra firm.
